New Legislation in Idaho Mark Johnson Director of the Idaho Board of Pharmacy was instrumental in changing Idaho State Code concerning Legend Drug Disposal.  Idaho Code 54-1732 Section 1.5 was signed into law on July 1, 2010.  This new change expands options to Idaho public and private entities to develop safe and effective disposal practices for unused and expired medication.  The new text is based on Federal Legislation

Prescription Drug Disposal Worldwide, there is serious concern with pharmaceuticals polluting our waterways and land areas.  A federal government study discovered 80% of waterways near metropolitan areas are polluted with various pharmaceuticals.   At this point, fish have already been affected by the wide variety of drugs pouring into their environment.  How this growing problem will affect humans and other animals is still being assessed.

When I started researching medication disposal, all of the articles were on the environmental impact to our water ways and landfills.  Although dealing with the environmental impact is important, a more critical issue is diversion and the cost to you as the tax payer and the government.  If the medication is not getting properly destroyed where is it going?
